Supporting Executive Functioning Challenges

Empowering Students to Plan, Organize, and Thrive
Executive functioning skills are essential for success in high school, college, and beyond. At Wolcott College Prep, we understand that students with executive functioning challenges—such as difficulty with organization, time management, task initiation, or working memory—need more than reminders and planners. They need structure, strategy, and support.
Our strength-based approach helps students develop these foundational skills with intention and consistency. From classroom routines to personalized coaching, executive function is woven into the fabric of the Wolcott experience.

How We Support Students with Executive Functioning Challenges

Learning Strategies Class
Every Wolcott student participates in a for-credit Learning Strategies course, which meets as frequently as any core academic class. This course provides direct instruction in time management, goal-setting, prioritization, planning, and academic self-monitoring. Students work in small groups and individually with a dedicated Learning Specialist.
Executive Function Coaching
Learning Specialists provide personalized, ongoing coaching tailored to each student’s unique needs. Students learn to break down long-term assignments, track progress, and adjust strategies with adult support and growing independence.
Faculty Collaboration & Universal Support
Wolcott teachers embed executive function support into daily instruction:
  • Clear agendas and visible schedules
  • Step-by-step task breakdowns
  • Visual cues and graphic organizers
  • Regular check-ins and scaffolded deadlines
Faculty work closely with Learning Specialists to ensure that supports are consistent across classes.
Tools & Technology
Students have access to digital tools like Google Calendar, reminders, and task management apps—plus instruction in how to use them effectively. For students who need additional accommodations, we provide support with note-taking, audio/text-based tools, and more.
SEL Integration
Wolcott reinforces self-awareness, goal-setting, and personal reflection—all essential components of executive functioning. Students learn not just how to stay on top of tasks, but how to stay connected to purpose and progress.
Building Independence, One Skill at a Time
Our goal is not to “fix” executive functioning challenges—but to equip students with strategies that help them navigate them. Wolcott graduates leave with the skills, tools, and confidence to manage their academic responsibilities, advocate for their needs, and thrive in college and life.
