Learning Strategies is a cornerstone of the Wolcott experience—a required course that meets as often as any other academic class throughout all four years of high school. Guided by a dedicated Learning Specialist, students work in small groups and one-on-one settings to strengthen executive functioning, organization, and study skills.

Individualized Learning and Growth

Each Learning Specialist partners with students to understand how they learn best. Together, they create and track individualized learning plans that focus on strengths, growth areas, and goals. Through regular reflection, students build self-awareness and learn strategies to organize their time, prepare for assessments, and understand how they think and learn—a concept known as metacognition.

Empowering Independent Learners

Learning Strategies empowers students to take ownership of their learning journey. They practice self-advocacy, problem-solving, and effective communication with teachers. Over time, students lead their own learning plan meetings, reflect on their progress, and use digital tools to strengthen organization and academic skills.

Workshops That Build Real-World Skills

Throughout the year, Learning Specialists lead workshops designed to help students grow both academically and personally. Topics include executive functioning, growth mindset, self-awareness, interview preparation, and college essay writing. These sessions give students practical tools for school—and life beyond Wolcott.

Collaboration Across the Curriculum

Learning Specialists work hand-in-hand with faculty across all departments to ensure that learning strategies are woven into everyday instruction. This collaboration allows teachers to embed scaffolds, adapt approaches, and create deeper connections across disciplines—helping every student engage meaningfully and successfully.
